Managed hosting is the better choice when you want a website platform that handles routine hosting operations. An unmanaged KVM VPS is the better choice when you need root access, custom server software, or operating-system control and can administer the server yourself. As of 26 September 2026, The Cloud Market offers both options with monthly and annual billing terms.
What changed in this guide?
- September 2026: Pricing and billing terms were checked against the current The Cloud Market plan pages.
- September 2026: The comparison now separates managed-service responsibilities from unmanaged server responsibilities.
What is the difference between managed hosting and an unmanaged KVM VPS?
Managed hosting provides a prepared website environment; an unmanaged KVM VPS provides an isolated virtual machine that you operate. Managed hosting reduces server-administration work. A KVM VPS provides root SSH access and more software freedom, but the customer is responsible for the operating system, patches, firewall rules, application stack, monitoring, backups, and recovery unless a separate service says otherwise.
| Decision factor | Managed web hosting | Unmanaged KVM VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | WordPress and conventional websites | Custom applications, APIs and self-managed server workloads |
| Server administration | Hosting platform manages the server layer | Customer manages the server and software stack |
| Root SSH | Not included | Included |
| Software freedom | Bounded by the hosting platform and plan | Customer can install supported operating-system software |
| Resource model | Plan limits inside a managed shared platform | Allocated vCPU, RAM and NVMe inside an isolated KVM virtual machine |
| Public IP | Managed as part of the hosting platform | Public IPv6 is included; public IPv4 is an optional add-on |
| Backups and updates | Plan-defined managed safeguards | Customer responsibility unless separately arranged |
| Operational skill | Suitable for customers who do not want to run a server | Requires Linux, security and recovery experience |
When should you choose managed hosting?
Choose managed hosting when the business needs a working website more than it needs control of the operating system. It is usually the practical option for company websites, blogs, portfolios and WordPress stores that fit the published plan limits.
The Cloud Market managed hosting includes a guided WordPress launch, managed or external-domain DNS and SSL workflows, passwordless WordPress Admin access, plan-defined backups, and general support intake. Features and limits vary by plan, so compare the current plan table before checkout.
- You want WordPress without maintaining Linux, PHP services or a web server.
- You prefer guided DNS, SSL and site setup.
- You want plan-defined backups and security controls.
- You do not require unrestricted shell access, Docker, or arbitrary server configuration.
When should you choose an unmanaged KVM VPS?
Choose an unmanaged KVM VPS when your workload requires root SSH access or software that a managed hosting plan does not provide. Common examples include custom APIs, background workers, private application services, development environments, and server stacks with specific package or operating-system requirements.
KVM isolates the virtual machine from other virtual machines at the virtualization boundary. It does not mean that every vCPU is a dedicated physical CPU, and it does not remove the need for capacity planning. The customer must monitor CPU, memory, storage, network use and application health.
- You can secure and maintain a Linux server.
- You need root access or custom packages.
- You can configure backups, monitoring and recovery.
- You understand that email delivery from a self-managed VPS requires separate reputation and deliverability planning.
How much do managed hosting and KVM VPS cost?
As of 26 September 2026, the US Starter managed-hosting plan is $2.99 per month equivalent when billed yearly, for an annual charge of $35.88. Monthly billing is also available. The US KVM 1 plan is $6.49 per month equivalent when billed yearly, for an annual charge of $77.88; one-month billing is also available. Taxes and optional add-ons are confirmed at checkout.
Prices can change. Check the current managed-hosting plans and current KVM VPS plans before buying. Customers in other regions should use the currency, location and billing term shown in their cart.
Which option is safer?
Managed hosting is normally safer for a team without server-administration experience because the platform controls more of the operational baseline. An unmanaged KVM VPS can be secured well, but the customer must configure access controls, updates, firewall rules, logging, backups and incident recovery correctly.
Root access increases control and responsibility at the same time. A forgotten security update, open management port, weak SSH configuration, or untested backup can turn that control into risk.
Can you move from managed hosting to a KVM VPS later?
Yes. A website can move from managed hosting to a KVM VPS when its technical requirements justify the added operational work. Plan the move around application compatibility, files, databases, DNS, SSL, email records, backups and rollback. Do not cancel the old environment until the new service has been tested and the cutover is stable.
Frequently asked questions
Is a KVM VPS always faster than managed hosting?
No. Performance depends on the application, configuration, caching, resource allocation and workload. A well-configured managed plan can outperform a poorly administered VPS for a conventional website.
Does a KVM VPS include a dedicated physical CPU?
No blanket claim should be made. A KVM plan lists allocated virtual CPUs, RAM and storage for the virtual machine; a vCPU is not automatically a dedicated physical core.
Is public IPv4 included with The Cloud Market KVM VPS?
Public IPv6 is included, while public IPv4 is an optional add-on. Review networking and add-on pricing in the cart before payment.
Does managed hosting include email?
Active The Cloud Market web hosting currently includes one business mailbox with 1 GB of storage per organization. Paid pooled storage is optional, and domain and mailbox setup are still required.
Which option should a small business choose?
A small business running WordPress should normally start with managed hosting. Choose an unmanaged KVM VPS only when the workload needs server-level control and someone is accountable for operating it.
